Although many people imagine winter to be the harshest season for a car’s battery, summer actually creates more wear. Both temperature extremes can take a toll on the battery’s life and create problems for you as a driver. Keeping it properly serviced will help protect against some of the worst situations.

Cold weather thickens the motor oil in a car. It takes longer and more effort to start, which creates more work for the battery and starter relay. Winter days mean less sunlight and longer hours with the headlights on. Add the heater and windshield wipers, and that’s more required of the electrical system and the battery-charging alternator.
For it’s part, summer’s heat evaporates liquid. It’s recommended keeping an eye on the battery fluid to make sure its electrolytes remain at proper levels. Overheating the battery reduces its ability to function.
